A day of walking uphill, through other people's wishes.
Before GPS, travellers could not know whether the road ahead was safe. They left hopes for harvests, prosperity and a safe return among the torii gates. Foxes became silent messengers for wishes that could not be posted.

There are around 10,000 torii gates here. Every single one was paid for by a person or a company, whose name and date are written on the back.

The foxes are not gods. They are messengers for Inari. The key in a fox's mouth is the key to a rice storehouse.

Kiyomizu-dera simply means 'pure water temple'. It is named after the Otowa waterfall behind it.

那个伸出去的大舞台有13米高,整座用木头搭成,一根钉子都没有用。
The great wooden stage stands 13 metres above the hillside and was built without a single nail.

瀑布分成三股水:学业、恋爱、长寿。只能选一股喝——贪心是不算数的。
The waterfall splits into three streams: study, love and long life. You may drink from only one. Being greedy cancels the wish.

This track is the old San-in main line. It was abandoned in 1989 when a new tunnel opened, rescued in 1991, and turned into a sightseeing train.

小火车只有7.3公里,却要走25分钟。它是故意开慢的。
The line is only 7.3 km long but the ride takes 25 minutes. It is slow on purpose.
Carriage five is called The Rich. It has no glass in the windows and a grating in the floor, so you can see the track below. You can only buy that seat on the day.

The ropeway is about 1.4 km long and lifts you to 400 m above the sea in about 10 minutes.

You pass over the Nunobiki Falls. That waterfall appears in the Tales of Ise, a book written more than a thousand years ago.
